Current Needs for Volunteers
Here are the current requests for specific volunteers:
- BESS Board Member -- 2 Openings!
According to the BESS corporate bylaws, the BESS Contributors elect a seven-member Board of Directors that is empowered to make all decisions necessary for the management and operation of BESS except for those decisions specifically reserved to the Contributorship. The Board appoints the officers of the corporation, creates teams and committees and appoints Contributors to staff them, and reviews and approves the policies, procedures, budgets, and unbudgeted expenditures of its authorized suborganizations. The Board may appoint an individual to fill any vacancy on the Board to serve until the next Annual Business Meeting, and therefore the Board is seeking volunteers from among the Contributors to fill an existing vacancy. Board members are expected to attend Board meetings in Columbia on the fourth Monday from January through November and the Annual Business Meeting. Its desirable that they attend some BESS events and occasionally volunteer to take care of an item before the Board for investigation or action. Any Contributor interested in possibly becoming a member of the BESS Board should contact a current member of the Board, a BESS officer, or the BESS Webmaster.
- BESS Ombudsman
The BESS corporate bylaws specify that BESS shall have an Ombudsman who is elected by the Contributorship at each Annual Business Meeting. The role of the Ombudsman is to have charge of and be responsible for administering the BESS Safe Space Policy as established by the Board and the Contributorship. As defined in this policy, safe space is an environment where all BESS contributors and guests can feel free of threats, intimidation, harassment, and the deliberate or negligent creation of unsafe conditions, and the Ombudsman is responsible for the fair resolution and procedural monitoring of complaints lodged under the Safe Space Policy. The time required to perform the Ombudsmans responsibilities ranges from none (as was the case for 2011) to possibly several hours for each safe space complaint. In the event of a vacancy in the Ombudsman position, the BESS Board is authorized to appoint a Contributor who is not a BESS Director to fill the unexpired term, and therefore the board is seeking volunteers from among the Contributors to fill this vacancy. Any Contributor interested in possibly becoming the Ombudsman should contact a current member of the Board, a BESS officer, or the BESS Webmaster.
